"You miss 100% of the shots you don't take" -Wayne Gretzky -Michael Scott
I generally overload and immerse myself in multiple creative projects at a time as I find it easier to finish a project that has been started rather than getting overwhelmed by all the steps it takes to complete a job from start to finish. This method of jumping right in has been very effective for me as a designer/creative juggling multiple projects because I have a trained/proven design process to apply to each project. But, until now, this method has not translated into showcasing my work with a web presence. I’ve struggled to hurdle this barrier of getting my creative work organized on a website for many reasons, the main being, I’ve never wanted to have a website that was simply my name. (made easier because it is already taken) It may seem trivial, but it has never appealed to me to brand myself/work/projects with my own name as I feel a potential customer can get a much more immediate understanding of who/what I am by using more conventional words.
Fast-forward to November 25th, 2018 I did a deep-dive into the origin of the word ‘Design’. Turns out the broad modern use is justified because it’s meaning is traced to Latin origins to simply describe, or mark out a plan. I wanted to describe what I do with design in a much more descriptive way without using it as a keyword. Given that ‘Design’ originated with Latin roots, I thought that would be a great place to start for a name to describe my mission. I came across the word ‘Artifex’ and loved the definition, the sound, and it’s similarity to the word ‘artifact’. As an Industrial Designer, I always strive to create products/ideas that will be considered a valued human artifact in the distant future. I then prefixed with the word ‘Modern’ to give it a more friendly, descriptive, and recognizable feeling and the rest is history.
With the name in place, I felt like I had my “Why” Mission statement in place and the rest is easily falling into place. I’m very excited for this journey, and I hope you enjoy the high-quality, inspiring, and useful ideas/products/content I’m contributing.
